Night Snow - Jack Moranetz
Jack is an active artist, woodblock carver, and printer based in Colorado, USA, who carves and produces his own prints.
He captures the process of woodblock carving and printing on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCin89lYaatc1dI3nHKsb57Q) and makes his prints available via Etsy ( https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/kintaroprints ).
Jack describes this print on his Etsy page:
This print was handmade using traditional Japanese techniques. I design, carve, and print each of the prints you see in my shop. I track this progress on my instagram and youtube @woodblockprinting.
This work depicts a snowy landscape scene at night, with a chilly surrounding lake.
In order to produce this print, each color visible is hand carved on wooden blocks individually. Then, pigment and rice paste is brushed onto each block. Moistened washi paper is laid onto the carvings and rubbed with a baren in order to transfer the image. This technique is over 400 years old and originates in Japan. Now, few craftsmen remain practicing this technique, and modern Mokuhanga art is more scarce than in the past.
This print has an actual "image" size of 4" by 6", with a small border around the print.
One of the exciting aspects of following contemporary Woodblock artists is that they often provide a wealth of information on their artistic process on social media.
Jack has produced the following Youtube video in his Youtube channel ‘Kintaroprintgs’ that shows the process of making minor modifications to some of the woodblocks used I this print, followed by video of the complete printing process using the different blocks to build up this print.
